Introducing archived sites

I'm happy to introduce the ability to archive your site data. You might be running that blog, site or page that is no longer used — but you want to hold onto the data for archival purpose — look at those good times, or bad. Well, now you can.

Enabled for paid subscribers, just head on over to your site settings and at the bottom find the "Archive Site" setting.

This does a few things once you confirm that you want to archive:

  • It'll immediately pause any stats being collected.
  • It'll remove any public viewing stats, if enabled, stop email reports, stops the site from being part of the webring, stop and delete any uptime monitoring and some few other bits and bobs.
  • Your stats, no matter your subscription status down the line, will not be deleted (nice!).

Your site, once archived, cannot be used again — you will have to create a new one to collect stats once again. It'll be basically in read-only mode.

Archived sites will show all your stats in one go, from the first time a hit was recorded to the last, allowing you to download your data as a CSV or filter depending on your needs. Filtering does require a subscription though.

You'll know this view already, although slightly slimmed down to remove items that are no longer needed, for example the "Uptime" tab. Settings are also hidden apart from a few options on the way you want to display stats.

In addition to this, there is now an "Archived" page (when you have one or more archived sites) — which appears at the top of your sites list.

I'm a strong believer that the data is yours and you should be able to access it no matter your circumstances (they can change on a whim) — so this is step one to keep hold of it and download it to do what you need.

Archived sites is not for everyone and I'll be working on adding more functionality for data export of the course of this year, making it even easier (and always available to you).

Hope you enjoy it and find it useful.
